Empowering not fixing

Writer: Nicola WilliamsNicola Williams

Some people have the misconception that as a therapist my job is to fix people. That really isn’t the case though at all. As a therapist my role is to support and empower you by offering you the tools to make the changes you want to make. This fundamental difference is what makes therapy effective.

How I do that is by providing a safe, non-judgemental space for you to express how you are feeling and unpick what you think is going on for you. I will offer a bit of psycho-education so you have a bit of knowledge about what might be going on for you. I offer choices of techniques to try that I think might work for you based on what you are telling me.

Some people can feel very stuck and my role is to sit with you in that stuckness while we work together to find what you need to get you to where you want to be. There is no such thing as ‘one size fits all’ in the therapy room.

At the end of the day I am just bringing my knowledge and expertise to the table but the person sitting opposite me is really the one doing all the hard work.
